Concept rendering: an open-plan kitchen with walnut cabinetry, a dark stone island and full-height glass facing the mountains

Service 04 · Interior Architecture

The rooms you live in, down to the details you touch every day.

Interior architecture covers the permanent parts of a room: the layout, built-in cabinetry, lighting, materials and the details you handle every day.

Overview

Interior architecture sits between designing the building and decorating it. It deals with the parts of a room that stay put, like how the space is divided, where the light comes from, what's built in and what the surfaces are made of. Get those right and choosing furniture gets a lot easier, because the room already has character.

We usually do this work as part of a new house or a renovation. Sometimes it's a project on its own, where the structure stays and the inside gets rethought.

When to get in touch

As early as possible in a new build or renovation. Interior decisions affect structure, wiring and window placement more than most people expect.

What’s involved

What the work covers.

This is the usual shape of the work. We adjust it to fit each project.

  1. 01

    Space planning

Room layouts, sightlines, doorways and furniture plans that work before anything is finished.

  2. 02

    Kitchen and cabinetry design

Custom cabinets, shelving, window seats and storage drawn around how you actually use them.

  3. 03

    Lighting plan

Layers of daylight, task lighting and mood lighting, coordinated with an electrician or engineer as needed.

  4. 04

    Materials and finishes

Floors, walls, stone, wood, metalwork and hardware chosen together so they work as a set and last.

  5. 05

    Detail design

The edges, joints and transitions that make a room feel finished.

A good fit if

Who this is for.

  • You want kitchens, storage and built-ins designed as part of the house.
  • You care about lighting that works at different times of day.
  • You'd like the whole house to share one set of materials instead of picking finishes room by room.
  • You're renovating and want the inside planned as well as furnished.

Worth knowing

Things to plan for.

  1. 01

    Plan for storage

Clutter is usually a storage problem. Plenty of storage in the right places keeps rooms calm.

  2. 02

    Light changes everything

Where light comes from and when has as much effect on a room as any finish.

  3. 03

    See samples at home

Materials look different at home than in a showroom. We review samples in the light they'll actually be seen in.

Questions

Interior Architecture: common questions.

All FAQs

Do you pick furniture and decor?

Our focus is the architecture of the interior. We're happy to work with an interior designer or stylist, or to give advice on key pieces so they suit the space.

Can you do interior architecture without major construction?

Yes. New cabinetry, lighting, surfaces and layout changes inside the existing structure can make a big difference by themselves.
